Shearwaters of Lord Howe Island
The horrific pictures of albatrosses with guts full of plastic bottle tops etc are disturbing to say the least.
But there are other birds suffering much closer to (my) home in a similar, possibly worse, way.
The flesh-footed shearwaters of Lord Howe Island are becoming endangered due to their levels of plastic ingestion.. Here's a story I saw on Catalyst recently.
Disturbing. They are "officially the world's most heavily contaminated seabird, just on mercury levels alone".
Dr Jennifer Lavers, who works on the project and who is featured in the above ABC story, has a site on the great work she's doing on this.
